Staying safe

Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic, Made Institute continuously strategized safe and inclusive methods for learning. We implemented online courses throughout our in-person studio closures, and transitioned back into the studio safely.

Please read through the information below carefully, and note that it is everyone’s, students, instructors and staff’s responsibility to ensure that we are all operating as safely as possible.

Vaccination Policy:

The City of Philadelphia has dropped its COVID-19 vaccination mandate for students/employees at higher education institutions as of April 2023. Effective immediately, Made Institute no longer requires COVID-19 vaccination for students nor employees.

To date, COVID vaccination continues to prevent severe disease outcomes.

Made Institute strongly recommends that students and employees stay up to date on COVID vaccination including any booster recommendations.

Following CDC advice:

Made Institute will be following the Philadelphia Department of Public Health on news regarding COVID in the Philadelphia region, as well as to continue following regulations distributed by the Center for Disease Control. As a community grounded in inclusivity, Made Institute is a highly vaccinated campus, and we believe that we will remain so. We are prepared to re-institute our vaccination mandate and take all necessary public health precautions should there be another acute COVID crisis. Our priority remains protecting the health of everyone in our community, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

Take your temperature:

Students, staff and instructors are advised to take their temperatures prior to entering the studio. If a student or instructor has reached a temperature above average, they should inform a staff member via email and stay home for the safety of the community.

Stay home:

Made Institute strongly encourages you to stay home if you have experienced symptoms or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. You will not face any reprisals from the Institute by doing so, and we are more than willing to make accommodations to help you.

Speak up:

If you are a student and feeling ill during class, please feel free to dismiss yourself from the studio. You should then email your instructor immediately.

Mask up:

It is at the discretion of the Made Institute team and instructors to require you wear a mask while in the building, and per the policy of our building. This includes upon entering the building, elevator, stairway and must not be taken off until you have exited the building.

Arrive Early:

The building elevator has limited capacity, so plan to arrive early to ensure you arrive on time for class.

No visitors:

For the foreseeable future, under no circumstances are friends or family members permitted to enter the studio out of an abundance of caution. Therefore, both studio doors should remain closed during all studio sessions. If a student is in the hallway, they must knock to be admitted into the studio.

Just in case:

If Made Institute is made aware of a positive COVID-19 case on-site we will mitigate by doing the following actions:

    1. Dismissing all students, staff and instructors immediately

    2. Resume classes/studio work hours when it is safe to proceed

    3. Discreetly/confidentially report to the Department of Health if necessary

Sewing Classes in the studio:

  1. Made Institute has pre-recorded Sewing 1, 2, 3 and 4 courses and will distribute to all students digitally. Students can play the lessons from a smartphone/device at their individual sewing machines in the class. Instructors will give demonstrations and answer questions and provide clarification and feedback. These videos will also be a helpful tool for homework assignments.

  2. Each student must adhere to the assigned sewing machine they are given at the beginning of the course. Each student should sanitize their machine before and after usage in our space.

  3. Students are responsible for sanitizing all used areas before and after usage.

  4. Each student must remember to bring all of their needed supplies each day, or be prepared to purchase a replacement item onsite. If a student is not prepared to buy a replacement item onsite, they must diligently watch each demonstration and complete each assignment by each next session regardless.

  5. All students will need to preemptively print their sewing patterns offsite to avoid sharing. Students are recommended to order with Arc Document Solutions Printing which carries our library of patterns for Sewing classes, but can also be emailed the desired file/size to print elsewhere. You will be instructed prior to your courses on how to request a print job for your specific patterns.
